The Chapada Diamantina is a region of mountains, located in the center of the Brazilian state of Bahia, where they were born almost all the rivers of the Paraguaçu of Jacuípe and Rio de Contas and occupies an area of 38,000 sq km. These streams of water peaks in spring and slide topography in beautiful streams, waterfalls plummet into bubbling pools and transparent form. The national park is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio).
The vegetation is lush, composed of species of the savanna and semi-arid mountain flora, especially bromeliads, orchids and evergreens. It has many natural attractions such as the Waterfall of Smoke and its 380 meters of free fall or the gorgeous Enchanted Well. But there are so many attractions that one can choose between visiting caves, bathe in the waterfall, trekking on ancient tracks miners, horse riding or play sports and adventures. The Highlands is home, its valleys and ridges, esoteric and alternative communities like the Capon Valley. The two highest points are in the Highlands of Bahia: Pico do Barbado with 2033 meters (the highest in the northeast) and the Pico das Almas with 1958 meters.
Walking breathing the fresh air and admiring the scenery is the main option for tourists from all over who visit the Highlands. The green seats keep always a surprise with crystal clear or colored sand, beautiful hills, flowers and vegetables that enchanted by the beauty and freshness. In Igatu, curiosity is sharpened amid the ruins of the ghost town, built with stones that form the walls of small caves.
